“Where Have All The Mentors Gone - Where Oh Where
Can They Be?”
Most of us have had mentors throughout our lives. From relatives
and friends as we grew up to those special care providers on our
squad or in the local emergency department, just to name a few.
Many of these mentors were hidden somewhere behind the lime light
of our individual ventures. Others stood boldly and knowingly by
our sides. Have you ever wondered who the mentors of today really
are? What about the future? In recent years an unfortunate common
theme appears to relish the land – Where have all the mentors
gone? During this interactive presentation, we will take a look
into this perhaps misfortune and discuss avenues and cut new roads
to reconstruct a dying breed. Where, oh where, have they gone?
“Safety from Day One”
Safety is an Attitude - Safety is a Culture – Safety is a
Behavior – Safety must be Personal. The question is - do EMS
leaders, managers and educators understand the importance that safety
must be instilled in the minds of providers from day one in the
training institution and on the job. EMS providers are injured on
the job everyday. The EMS leader and educator is instrumental in
setting the new recruit off on the right foot. Providers, new and
existing, supervisors, managers, and administrators must integrate
safety applications into every EMS function. Interact with the speaker
on practical approaches to integrate safety into all learning functions
and tasks performed – It is a Life Time of Practice!
“Let Your Voice Be Heard!”
A dynamic presentation that is sure to spark thought and motivate
attendees to start asking questions about EMS unity. This presentation
theme expresses the need and importance for emergency service providers
abroad to speak up and be heard from a common and collective voice.
The necessity of building relationships between all players in the
EMS community it is at an all time high. We can accomplish this
through open communication and a common agenda. Do you want more
money? Do you need more volunteers? Do you want…? It is time
to come together as one! Let Your Voice Be Heard!
“Strategic Planning or Planning Strategically”
Strategic planning must be a method of planning strategically.
Departments must evaluate how the environment is today, research
applicable data, analyze the data, and project what the environment
may look like three, five, and even seven years in the future. Next
the department must determine what this perceived environment will
need from the fire department and develop action steps to attain
the objectives. This study follows an actual strategic process in
action and incorporates planning strategy to offer an efficient
and effective operational plan.
Liability Issues Confronting EMS into the New Millennium
Today’s EMS world has become extremely litigious.
The EMS industry is confronted with issues involving response and
dispatch, patients being dropped, patient refusals, medical malpractice,
management issues, equipment failures, and patient care documentation.
If you are a company officer responsible for an EMS crew, this seminar
is a must for you.
The session addresses the many areas of exposure that providers
of first response crews and patient transportation crews, face in
their day-to-day operation. Subjects discussed include professional
liability, patient drops, dispatch errors, getting lost on calls,
ambulance crashes, patient care documentation, incident reports,
adherence to protocols or standing orders, medical malpractice including
issues involved when administering the wrong medication or administering
the right medication via the wrong route or dose, patients who refuse
your care and/or transportation, and many other pertinent topics.
Actual case scenarios will be used to highlight the importance of
the topics discussed above. The provider will acquire a deeper appreciation
of the need to provide patient care according to their protocols
or standing orders, scope of practice, and the present standard
of care expected in their part of the world.
EMS Personnel as Safety Officers –
What you need to know to keep personnel safe!
EMS is getting more complex than ever. There are standards
that require agencies to have a minimum number of personnel on the
scene of an incident. As a result we expect more out of those on
the scene. At the same time the number of actual fires is decreasing.
Safety is a critical factor; it is your life on the line. A safety
officer is the necessity at every incident. EMS can serve in the
role as the safety officer either designated or as another set of
eyes.
The session addresses the basics of being safety officer on the
scene of incident. Learn what the basic function of safety officer
does at the scene of an incident. This session will also make you
more aware of what to look for and what to do when you see a potential
safety issue on the scene of an incident. When you leave this session
you take with you key information to help you and the crews that
you work with be safe whether at the scene of a structure fire or
working at an incident along a highway. You won’t want to
miss this session; it may be the difference between life and death.
Simulation or Reality – the New Dimension of Training
Training is an essential part of the existence of the fire
and EMS service. It is also getting more difficult and in some instances
more dangerous to conduct training in a real environment. Technology
is as much a part of our lives as water is used to fight fires.
Simulation is becoming part of many training programs. There are
simulators for fire training, patient care, and driver training.
This session will look at the usefulness of simulation and how
it fits into training our personnel. Should simulation replace actual
hands on training? Does simulation have any effect in teaching personnel
the skills they need to perform the job? Who learns best from using
a simulator? There are so many questions. This session will address
these questions and may more relating to the effectiveness and usefulness
of simulators as they fit into EMS.
Training Officer Academy
Training Officer Academy is designed with the new training officer
in mind. Seasoned training officers find the session equally rewarding
in learning new techniques and gaining an understanding in a variety
of education methodology sessions of the program.
Performance Evaluations the Senior Management of the Fire
Service
Performance evaluations are commonplace for conducting on the employees
of an organization. Most emergency service organizations there is
no formal mechanism in place. This session discusses the findings
of evaluating the Chief Officers to the staff of an organization.
Bridging the Gap

people? What values do they have? Discussion on what makes each
generation different. Learn the various values of each of the different
generations. Identify what we, as leaders have to do to make our
work environment adaptable for each of the generations. Before you
leave this session see why being a cusp may not be all that bad.
When an unwelcomed visitor comes.
First there was fast and furious Charlie, then slow poke Frances,
wet Jeanne, and unpredictable Ivan. Florida experienced one of its
worse hurricane seasons since the beginning of weather records.
There were many lessons that were learned in preparation, during
the event, and the aftermath. This session will discuss a number
of these lessons learned on a personal and global perspective as
result of these storms. This session will discuss the critical infrastructure
protection, evacuation planning, and the recovery process of a major
event. The smallest of items become a major deal in such an event.
Instructional Development for the Aspiring Instructor
You have instructed the alphabet programs and helped out in the
clinical and laboratory settings. You are the JEDI of the classroom,
at least you hope you are. This session will take you beyond and
bring you back the cosmic rays of the classroom. Topics will include
the adult as a student, educating the generation gap, learning disabilities,
classroom design, and evaluation design. If you are looking for
a session to increase your instructional abilities, you won’t
want to miss this session.
Establishing an EMS Team as Part of Your Hazmat Team
This session will discuss the role of EMS at the hazmat scene. The
session will take an in-depth look at the Advanced Hazmat Life Support
course and how to utilize the program in establishing an EMS hazmat
team. The participants will also have the opportunity to discuss
their best practices and how they have incorporated their EMS crews
at hazmat scenes. If you are underutilizing your EMS crews and want
to incorporate them in an effective manner, this session is for

program, come share your successes.

programs and reducing the number of fires and fire related injuries
and deaths in the United States. It is time for EMS to learn and
implement an injury prevention program. This session will identify
a number of successful injury prevention programs. Describe how
to implement an injury prevention program. Public health is an asset
that is under utilized. Learn how this agency can be a vital part
of your injury prevention program. Learn how busy organizations
can implement a simple program without placing an overburden on
your crews. If you want to start an injury prevention division,
your in luck too, this session has something for every organization!
